At the birth of our nation, 56 men pledged their lives, fortunes, and sacred honor to secure the right of self-determination. Generations since have risked everything to defend that right—whether suffragists enduring the “Night of Terror” in 1917 or Black men in Colfax, Louisiana, who died protecting election results in 1873. Voting has never been free or easy, but it has always been essential. Today, that sacred privilege belongs to us. Yet in Kootenai County, turnout for local races—where decisions about our schools, libraries, safety, and growth are made—remains far too low. These elections shape our daily lives more than any presidential contest, and they demand our full attention. This November, we invite you to honor those who fought for your voice. Register, show up, and vote with intention. Be a voter to your core—engaged, empowered, and ready to shape the future of our community.
