Progressive Diners- Justice Reinvestment Initiative

Justice Reinvestment Initiative

Justice Reinvestment Initiative is a policy that our Legislature bought into as a way to save $280 million for the construction of another prison.  JRI’s focus is to slow prison population growth by changing how the state rehabilitates the incarcerated in our community. The program promotes smarter sentencing and smarter supervision for those on probation. The initiative calls for contributing about $5 million a year to funding this program for a total of seven years. The total investment is $35 million. There are a lot of good ideas in JRI. However, the amount of the investment is insufficient. In other words, Idaho’s Legislature has done prison reform on the cheap. Join the Progressive Diners on Wednesday, January 3 as we discuss this program with guest speaker Judge John Mitchell.

Judge Mitchell is a great speaker with a compelling story concerning the approach we take to slow prison growth. He will discuss the impact of the Justice Reinvestment Initiative on Idaho’s various courts.

You must RSVP Steve Moss if you plan to attend so our room is properly prepared. Diners should arrive by 6:15 PM to get seated and place food or beverage orders before the presentation begins.

We do not like to turn people away, however, we have been over capacity at the last few meetings. Therefore, please RSVP to secure your reservation. Also, if you have a reservation and cannot attend, please let us know so that someone else can take your place at the table. If you happen to reserve late and can not be accommodated, you will be placed on a wait list and notified in the event of an opening.
