Progressive Diners: Dr. Michael Whiting–the Opioid Crisis

Progressive Dinersimage.png

A brief internet search revealed that 130 people die in the US daily from opioid overdoses and that mortality in middle aged whites has actually increased due in part to these narcotics. Opioids are drugs that act on the nervous system to relieve pain. Unfortunately, continued use and abuse can lead to physical dependence and withdrawal symptoms. It is this aspect of these pain killing drugs that have led to increasing addiction and death. Our speaker will be Michael Whiting MD. He will lead a discussion of the Opioid Crisis.

Dr Whiting, our speaker this month, has spent much of his career treating opioid addiction and managing chronic pain and is considered the expert in this area. He will take a look at each of the major players in the crisis including physicians, politicians, payers, drug cartels and pharmaceutical companies. Dr Whiting will discuss some ideas about what can be done and about how each person present can make a difference in stemming the crisis.
