Progressive Diners-Amending Citizens United

Amending Citizens United

The Citizens United ruling by the Supreme Court removed restrictions regulating political campaign spending by corporations and other organizations. According to many political experts, the ruling has had a significant negative impact on our political process. Consequently, there is a strong and growing nationwide effort to reverse it. This coalition is  called Move to Amend (MTA). Their Outreach Director is Greg Coleridge. Greg will be in our area and has agreed to speak to us about the movement. More importantly, he hopes to encourage our involvement in this grassroots effort. We are fortunate that his travel schedule coincides with our Progressive Diners’ meeting. Please join us for an engaging conversation about steps we can take toward amending Citizens United.

Move to Amend was formed in September 2009. It is a coalition of hundreds of organizations and hundreds of thousands of individuals. The group is committed to social and economic justice, ending corporate rule, and building a vibrant democracy that is genuinely accountable to the people, not corporate interests.

Calling for an amendment to the US Constitution is their goal. The coalition unequivocally stands on the belief that inalienable rights belong to human beings only. In addition, the movement believes that money is not a form of protected free speech under the First Amendment and therefore it can be regulated in political campaigns. Ultimately, they intend to persuade the courts to adopt these views and amend Citizens United.
