Currently, a three-member board of elected commissioners supervise our county government. However, the county is currently considering changes that include adding either an elected executive position or appointed professional county manager into the oversight and administration structure of county government. To help us understand these options and what this change would entail, the Democratic Club has invited Dave Childs to speak with us. Childs is a member of the International City/County Management Association (ICMA). Specifically, Dave is a former ICMA State Liaison to Idaho, North and South Dakota, Montana, and Wyoming. As a former county manager, Dave can provide insight into the role and how having a city/county management professional can help provide better government for Kootenai County.
You are affected by this decision, whether you live in a city or in the unincorporated parts of our county. For example, our county government affects property tax evaluation, assessment, and collection. In addition, the county treasurer, coroner, prosecutor, sheriff, and clerk would be under the oversight of this management position. To add to the intrigue, five of six of these elected offices will be on the ballot in November.
Join us this Friday at noon online to hear how a professional manager would enhance county governance.
