June is Pride Month. It commemorates the pivotal moment of awakening and unification of members of the LGBTQIA+ community in New York City’s Greenwich Village community. On June 28, 1969, patrons of a gay bar called the Stonewall Inn stood up to police brutality and intimidation and demanded equal treatment under the law. This moment of solidarity and resistance lasted six days and became a catalyst of the Gay Rights Movement. In recognition of this moment and the movement it initiated, we celebrate Pride Month.
This Friday, the Democratic Club welcomes Jessica Mahuron. Jessica is a volunteer at the North Idaho Pride Alliance. This local nonprofit works on behalf of Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual, Transgender, Queer/Questioning, Intersex, and Asexual (LGBTQIA+) people, community groups, and allies in our community. Their mission is to create a more inclusive North Idaho by networking, educating, and advocating on behalf of LGBTQIA+ Americans.
Join Jessica on Friday, June 10 at noon online for a presentation about the North Idaho Pride Alliance and the work it does in our community.
Pride in the Park
A popular event in the Pride Calendar is Pride in The Park. This family friendly event takes place in and around the CDA City Park Bandshell on June 11th. The annual event celebrates diversity and works to build a stronger and more unified community for ALL. It includes food, entertainment, a family/children’s activity area, and over fifty booths. It starts at 11am and ends at 3pm.
