KC Dem Club: Nomination of Officers and Food Bank Collections

Dec 6 Dem Club

Friday Club Meeting

This weekly gathering of the Democratic Club features the nomination of officers for the club. The nominating committee will present the slate of candidates before nominations from the floor will be accepted. We hope to have the election on Friday, December 20 in accordance with our bylaws. As usual the Democratic Club will meet at the Iron Horse on Sherman Ave at noon this Friday, December 6.
In addition to the nominating slate and Christmas stockings, our guest speaker is a young lady who exemplifies the best of who we are in our country and in Idaho.  Our guest speaker is Lilian Smith.Lilian Smith is the co-founder of Growing the STEM and a junior at Coeur d’Alene High School. She started and leads the Math is Cool team at Fernan STEM Academy and serves as vice president on the board of Growing the STEM, where her focus is on fundraising and planting new programs.  For her work with GTS, Lilian has been named Outstanding Youth Philanthropist and has been nominated for the Idaho’s Brightest Star Award and the Prudential Spirit of Community Award.  Lilian is also vice president of the junior class, captain of the cross country team, chair of the Coeur d’Alene Press Student Advisory Council, and participates in debate, tennis, National Honor Society, and mathematics and academic competitions.  If that’s not enough to make family proud, please read on.
Growing the STEM is a local nonprofit that organizes and supports math and science programs for students in Coeur d’Alene Public Schools, with an emphasis on developing youth leaders and encouraging under-represented groups to pursue STEM education and activities.  GTS currently has 15 after-school math programs in 12 CDA schools, serving 425 students and engaging over 30 youth leaders.  Learn more at www.growingthestem.org.

Food Drive

Our outreach committee is collecting non-perishable food and cash donations for the Post Falls Food Bank. Donations will be collected each Friday at the Democratic Club meetings during the month of December. You can also drop off donations at the holiday party at Art Spirit Gallery on December 9th. Last year, the Community Action Food Bank in Cd’A received nearly $300’s worth of goods from generous KC Dem members! Thanks you in advance for your generosity. Happy Holidays!

Christmas Stocking Project

Also, you are invited to include individually wrapped candy that can be used to stuff Christmas stockings for area children. We hope as a group to prepare 50 small Christmas stockings to provide to the food bank for distribution. The stockings will be placed on the tables to be filled as we eat and socialize. Apart from 50 candy canes which we already have any other small individually wrapped items would be welcome. Each of us can place the individual items we have brought in the 50 small stockings. We hope everyone agrees that bringing some Christmas joy to the people who may use the food bank this Christmas is a worthy tasks for committed Democrats.
We wish you all a Merry Christmas and hope to see you this Friday at the Club.
