“We do not inherit the earth from our ancestors. We borrow it from our children.” – Native American Proverb
Climate Change is Real. It is the world in which we live. Every day in many ways we are choosing whether to destroy the climate or to save it. Our children, grandchildren all need this revolving green and blue sphere we call earth. This Friday, Oct. 25, noon, at the Democratic Club we will discuss this earth and our climate. The program consists of several short videos that discuss climate change. These will include Greta Thunberg, Bill Nye and an explanation on the Green New Deal. The program will necessitate some discussion from the club members and guests attendees.
Each month, the Kootenai Democrats are posting a notice in the Coeur d’Alene Press on an issue of universal importance. Climate is the October notice. Watch for it in the Cd’A Press print or electronic versions. We hear and read about climate change. Moreover, scientists continue to warn us of the problem and what we should do about it. Yet, many of our elected leaders continue to ignore the warnings. They are either denying the science or simply don’t care.
Fortunately, there are young people who are taking action to raise awareness about this critically important issues. Young leaders like Greta Thunberg, Swedish student; Isra Hirsi, 16 year old daughter of Minnesota US Rep. Lihan Omar and co-founder of US Youth Climate Strike; Xiye Batista, 17 year old who helped organize the US Global Climate Strike in NYC, and others–names we way have never heard of or can even pronounce properly. They are leading a movement that is uniting people across our nation and our globe. Now that our youth are leading the way, we must step up as well. Yet, we must also become more informed so that we can reach our own conclusions based on the most reliable information. Then, we can decide the best way to help and to reduce our carbon footprint.
It is time to get involved. If not for yourself then for your children or grandchildren. We can’t just leave them the problems, Rather, we need to work together now or there will be no tomorrow. This issue has no political boundary. Therefore, bring a friend of any political persuasion and join the discussion. We all just might start talking again and and solving our problems.
