Earth Day promotes ecological awareness and responsible environmental stewardship. Celebrated each year on April 22, the day encourages people throughout the world to protect the earth and its diverse habitats. First celebrated in 1970 to honor the Earth and world peace, Earth Day now encompasses a vast array of events which are coordinated worldwide by the Earth Day Network.
Kootenai Environmental Alliance
Kootenai Environmental Alliance (KEA) is the oldest non-profit conservation organization in Idaho. The KEA operates out of Coeur d’Alene, Idaho and works throughout North Idaho. Local leaders founded the organization in 1972. They were former Idaho State Senators Art Manley and Mary Lou Reed, along with well-known environmental attorney Scott Reed. They created the KEA as a direct response to local pollution and land management issues. At the time of its creation, the area suffered severe environmental damage resulting from extensive timber harvesting. In addition, our area suffered from extensive water and air pollution caused by the Silver Valley mining industry. As a result of this environmental legacy, the KEA works tirelessly to restore, maintain and protect our precious natural resources.
