Democratic Club – Bringing Justice to Low Income Idahoans

This Friday, the Democratic Club will be hearing from Alan Wasserman, the managing attorney at Idaho Legal Aid Services CDA. Idaho Legal Aid Services is a nonprofit statewide law firm dedicated to providing equal access to justice for low income people through quality advocacy and education.

Wasserman will be discussing Fair Housing and HOPA (Housing for Older Persons Act). The Fair Housing Act (FHA) protects all residents from discrimination on the basis of color, national origin, race, religion, sex, handicap or familial status. The Housing for Older Persons exemption allows for some senior housing facilities or communities to provide housing specifically to older persons and not face liability for familial discrimination. Idaho Legal Aid Services is committed to searching out the patterns, causes and solutions of the repetitive and fundamental legal problems facing our client community, and seeking legal recourse necessary to readdress the grievances of our clients.

Idaho Legal Aid Services works to provide for the poor in the Benewah, Bonner, Boundary, Kootenai and Shoshone counties. Currently, the office focuses its work on representing victims of domestic violence, tenants, homeowners facing foreclosure, public benefit applicants/recipients, and senior citizens needing help with guardianships, powers of attorney, simple probates, and paying for long-term care.
