Dem Club: Government policy keeps Native Americans impoverished

how US Government policy keeps Native Americans impoverishedThis Friday, the Dem Club welcomes Professor Victor Begay. He will outline how US Government policy keeps Native Americans impoverished. Our nations indigenous tribes have been forced to rely on the US Government to administer tribal lands and oversee indian affairs. In fact, the government’s mandate is to look out for the best interests of the indian people. However, history shows that the government has continuously failed to live up to this responsibility. In fact, the government has systematically undermined native american interests and shirked its legal obligations. As a result, Native American reservations are among the poorest communities in the United States.

Dr. Begay is an Assistant Professor of American Indian Studies at North Idaho College. He teaches classes on American History and American Indian Sovereignty.
