September is Suicide Prevention Awareness Month. Consequently, the Suicide Prevention Action Network (SPAN) of North Idaho is organizing a 5k suicide awareness and prevention walk. This annual walk serves to raise awareness about the support available for those contemplating suicide. In addition, the event highlights the work SPAN does to support those impacted by the tragedy of a suicide. And finally, the event acts as a key fundraiser for SPAN of North Idaho.

Kootenai Dems Step Up in Support of SPAN

For the fifth year in a row, the Kootenai Democrats are sponsoring this important community awareness event. If you wish to contribute funds to cover our sponsorship fee, send a check in any amount to KCDCC, PO Box 1297, CDA 83816 and just write “SPAN walk” on the notation line. We appreciate any amount you feel moved to donate. Thanks.

In addition, we are mustering a crew of volunteers to assist with the event.

Suicide is a Public Health Crisis

It may surprise you to hear that Idaho’s suicide rate is among the highest in the nation, and Kootenai County’s suicide rate is among the highest in our state. Consequently, the resources and services offered by SPAN are key to addressing this ongoing mental health crisis. In addition to working with families and individuals affected by suicide, SPAN also educates the public, as well as educators and law enforcement about the signs to look for in those considering suicide.

Break the Silence 5k SPAN Walk

The Break the Silence walk is Saturday, September 10th at Riverstone Park in Coeur d’Alene. The walk around the park trail starts at 10 am and ends near the park pavilion. Check in and registration begins at 8:30 am. If you can, please pre-register. Event T-shirts will be available for purchase for $30. Proceeds go to SPAN of North Idaho.

Event Details and Registration

Parking is available in the Tilford Lane parking area. In addition, there are various other parking options in the area. Just look for the signs for public parking.
