Lately, many have expressed concern about the erosion of our Constitutional rights and the state of our nation. These worries are real, and they resonate deeply here in North Idaho. While we can’t singlehandedly change national politics, we can make a meaningful difference right here at home.
If we truly want to take back our community and our country, the solution is not found in louder arguments or deeper divisions. The answer is in giving back—and listening.
That means showing up, giving time, and pitching in wherever possible. It means volunteering at the library, mentoring in local schools, gathering items for the food bank, or even spending a morning picking up trash at City Beach. These simple acts strengthen the fabric of our community. They connect us to one another and remind us of our shared values, even when we disagree politically.
This fall, we have the perfect opportunity to do exactly that. On Saturday, October 25 from 10 AM to 3 PM at Ramsey Park’s South Parking Lot, the Kootenai County Democrats will host our Annual Community Food and Supply Drive. The event will benefit two vital local organizations: 3rd Ave Marketplace in Post Falls and Community Action Partnership in Coeur d’Alene.
We’ll be collecting not only non-perishable food but also school supplies, diapers, gas gift cards, and essential household goods like toilet paper, laundry detergent, and pet food. The list is long because the needs in our community are real. Children need sneakers for school. Food banks need egg cartons to distribute fresh food. Parents need basic supplies so their kids can complete homework with pride.
Our community drive is about more than meals—it’s about dignity. Just as we advocate for policies that help every North Idahoan thrive, we come together to ensure no neighbor is left hungry or without the essentials.
This is not about party politics. It’s about people.
When we show up for one another, something powerful happens. We begin to see our neighbors not as political opponents, but as fellow community members. We listen to their stories, understand their challenges, and recognize how much we all share.
That understanding changes how we talk to one another. Instead of focusing on what divides us, we find common ground in what matters most—healthy kids, strong schools, safe neighborhoods, and the dignity of having enough to eat and the tools to build a good life.
That, after all, is the true purpose of government: to protect a great quality of life for the people it serves.
Last year’s food drive filled multiple SUV loads with food and supplies. At least 40 cars belonged to people we had never met before at Democratic events. That is the power of service. It builds bridges across divides and reminds us that when it comes to helping neighbors in need, compassion always comes first.
So if you’re frustrated by the state of politics or weary of the endless shouting matches, here’s our invitation: join us on October 25 at Ramsey Park. Bring a bag of groceries, a pack of notebooks, or a gas gift card. More importantly, bring your belief that our community is worth caring for.
Because that’s how we truly take back our community—not through division, but through participation. Not with anger, but with generosity. Not by retreating into our corners, but by coming together to build something stronger.
