Two Fine Democrats Step Forward

In Kootenai County, it is particularly challenging to find candidates willing to face down our extremist IFF/GOP opposition. It takes fortitude to expose yourself and your family to potential harassment from whipped up radicals. Yet, despite these headwinds, we heard some good news last weekend. Our scheduled social events yielded two fine Democrats anxious to represent Legislative District 4. One is Larry Bieber, a retired math instructor and basketball coach. The other is Megan Dardis-Kunz, a practicing social worker.

Both declared their intentions to run for the House of Representatives. Moreover, they both referenced actions by the GOP extremist wing as a motivating factor. Watch for official announcements of their declared campaigns in the coming weeks. Larry and Megan (LD-4) join Teresa Borrenpohl (LD-5), as Kootenai Democrats running to fill legislative seats in 2022. Our wholehearted support efforts for Larry, Megan, and Teresa start now.

For example, our ongoing phone banking takes place several nights each week. At each scheduled outreach, volunteers make hundreds of calls in their effort to identify our potential voters. If you want a change in Kootenai County’s political direction, join our phone banking effort by calling or emailing our Field Organizer Brody Robbins. He can be reached at 208 704 2181 or brody@idahodems.org. Thank you in advance.

Filing Deadline Coming Soon

This is the final reminder to Precinct Captains that March 11 is the deadline to declare your candidacy with the County Elections Office. Here is what you must do.

First, confirm your precinct number by using the Polling Place Look Up tool. The tool uses your street address to confirm your voter information including your precinct number.

Then, call Phil Ward at 305 297 3361 to find out if another Democratic Precinct Captain is assigned to your precinct. If two people are assigned to the same precinct, you can both run for the position or one of you can agree to step down. Phil can help you assess your options.

Finally, complete a Declaration of Candidacy and have it notarized. Then, return it to the Elections Office at 1808 N. 3rd St. in Coeur d’Alene. The filing deadline is March 11 at 5 PM. Please note that filing a notarized Declaration of Candidacy must be done in person.

Also, you do not have to file campaign finance forms if you spend less than $100 on your campaign and you don’t even have to run for election at all to serve as a Precinct Captain. In this case, the Central Committee can appoint you to the post. This process will take a little bit of time, so thank you in advance for your service to our county Democratic Central Committee.

Promote Love not Hate

Last week, I shared the appalling news that the Aryan Freedom Network is holding a White Supremacist Gathering in Hayden this weekend. To counter this event, the Human Rights Education Institute and Love Lives Here CDA are co-sponsoring an uplifting and positive public event called Kindness Toss: Tossing around Frisbees & Kindness. This public event takes place at the McIntire Family Park in Hayden from 11:30AM-1PM on Saturday, March 12. The purpose is to build community, through shared messages of universal kindness.

Speaking of community, mark your calendars for these upcoming public events.

  • April 23rd – Earth Day Celebration
  • April 23rd – Corn Hole Tournament
  • June 11th – Pride in the Park

Have an awesome week everyone.
