SPRING OFFERS OPPORTUNITIES TO BE HEARD
Despite uncertainties surrounding the health and resilience of our Democracy, one thing remains constant, the beauty of spring. This season of renewal fosters a sense of hope. The pleasant weather that comes with the season also encourages us to go outside. So, whether you are engaged in pleasant social gatherings or passionate protest marches, I urge every Democrat to get outside and make your voices heard.
HELP RECRUIT POTENTIAL VOTERS
On May 29th, Kootenai Democrats are taking part in a statewide letter writing effort to recruit 14,000 new Likely Democrats from the roles of non-registered Idahoans. This outreach effort is an easy way to have a high impact on voter registration. Volunteers will write short messages to potential voters as well as address and seal the outgoing envelopes. The postage and handling will be managed by the Idaho Democratic Party. Watch our website and social media for further details which will be coming soon.
JOIN US FOR A SPRING PICNIC IN RATHDRUM
On Sunday, June 22, the Democrats are hosting a “Grill & Chill” social gathering at Majestic Park in Rathdrum. This public picnic features live music, food, and beverages. It also includes a keynote address from Gubernatorial candidate Terri Pickens. Terri is an attorney. She is also an exciting speaker who I am sure you will want to hear.
PLAN TO JOIN US ON JULY 4TH
The theme of Coeur d’Alene’s July 4th Parade is “Home of the Brave.” It goes without saying that the Kootenai Democrats support and honor the courage of our military veterans. However, in these uncertain times, we feel it is our duty to also honor Americans who risked personal freedom to question authority.
With that idea in mind, we will focus on defending our First Amendment rights including freedom of religion, speech, press, assembly, and the right to petition the government. Watch for complete details on the Events page of our website as well as our social media.
ERASING HISTORY
If you are seeking clarity on how we got into this national mess, I strongly recommend Erasing History: How fascists rewrite the past to control the future by Jason Stanley. In the book, he breaks down how authoritarian leaders succeed in convincing a broad swath of people to vote against their best interests. Professor Stanley explains how bigotry, fear, and grievance are used to influence people and to solidify political power. Although the topic is gloomy, the book also offers hope. Professor Stanley details how a better understanding of our past can provide a path for building a better future. This book is available at the Coeur d’Alene Public Library, or it will be after I return it.
MAY 20 CONSOLIDATED ELECTION
Ballots for the May 20th election are now official, and the following candidates are requesting support. They are Jerry Wallace for the Ross Point Water District, Corinne Johnson for the Worley Highway District, and Michelle Lippert for the Community Library Network. Their open solicitation of Democratic votes marks a change from past practice, where independent candidates who align with our values wished to remain ideologically non-partisan.
