PRESIDENT BIDEN’S AGE IS A DISTRACTION

Shortly after the 2020 election, the press started raising concerns about Joe Biden’s age. Unsurprisingly, this speculation amplified voter unease about his long-term viability to serve as President. This simmering anxiety stayed in the background until President Biden gave it credence by performing poorly during the recent Presidential debate. Now this underlying concern has become a full-blown crisis for the President. Various Party leaders and media pundits, as well as average voters are questioning whether he should step down and make room for a new nominee to win Party approval at the DNC Convention in August. In my opinion, the whole kerfuffle is an issue that we have no power over. Consequently, I suggest that until a decision is made, we should concentrate on what we can control.

LOCAL CANDIDATES NEED YOUR SUPPORT

Therefore, let’s focus our attention on phone banking, door knocking, and donating to help our local candidates compete in their local races. In my humble opinion, it is the most impactful thing we can do right now.

OUR LIBRARIES ARE NOW BURDENED WITH AN UNNECESSARY LAW

On July 1, 2024, House Bill 710 went into effect. You might not know the bill by its number, but HB 710 is the sue your local library legislation. Every Kootenai legislator voted for it, and Governor Little signed it.

Under the new law, public or private libraries in Idaho must zone off any book that is considered “harmful” to children. Since harmful is a relative term, it puts librarians under considerable pressure to find and quarantine the books that might cause offense.

As a result of the law there are librarians who are leaving their jobs to find work elsewhere rather than deal with the pressures of following this legislation. The fiscal impact for libraries includes spending limited resources on the creation of “adults only sections,” as well as the purchase of liability insurance to cover the defense of potential lawsuits.

Children will suffer as well. Now, they will be unable to access age-appropriate content covering controversial topics like gender identity, racial discrimination, and sex. As a result, they will likely feed their curiosity by seeking information on the internet or relying on what they hear on the playground. These are not good alternatives.

To show support for our public libraries, Democrats staged rallies at the library branches throughout the county on the first of this month. In addition to standing up for our libraries, demonstrators shouted out support for the freedom to read.

HB 710 is the tragic result of a closed-minded faction that has gained power over local government. Don’t know what else to say, except that voting them out of power is our only recourse.
