SCOTUS Allows State Ban on Gender Affirming Care

The US Supreme Court has given Idaho permission to enforce its ban on gender affirming care while a case challenging that ban awaits adjudication. This is not good news. It hints that the six seat GOP majority on the court sees some legal merit in the ban.

Chair Lauren Necochea said the following: “I remain hopeful that the ban on gender-affirming care will be thrown out as unconstitutional, as a lower court found. It is unthinkable that Idaho providers now face up to a decade in prison for prescribing medications that are the standard of care endorsed by major medical associations.”

She went on to say “My heart goes out to the Idaho families most directly impacted by this ruling. We must recognize that laws attacking the LGTBQ+ community and our medical providers harm all Idahoans. Idaho is strongest when we live our values of being welcoming and kind. We all rely on doctors and nurses to be willing to work in our healthcare environment. The Republican supermajority is moving our state backward, and it will take many years to undo the damage.”

Idaho Democrats believe that all Idahoans should be free to seek medical care for their children. Unfortunately, our opponents have once again inserted themselves into the medical exam room, a space that should be the private domain of a patient and their physician.

Ongoing GOP Extremism Stirs a Democratic Resurgence

Liz Crampton of Politico posted an article today, April 17, about the fact that there will be a Democrat running in every Idaho state district for the first time in at least 30 years. This political revival stems from a backlash that has been forming in response to recent extremist rulings and legislation.

In the article, she says “Democrats feel emboldened by the GOP supermajority’s obsession with culture war issues like enacting a strict abortion ban, attacking LGBTQ+ rights and proposing jailing librarians over violating book bans. They also see bitter infighting between the conservative and moderate flanks of the GOP as an opportunity to present voters with a different vision for the future of the state.”

This isn’t news to us, but it is good to see that our fight is gaining visibility. It is also important to understand that we can’t win if we don’t participate and putting candidates on the ballot is central to this precept. The next step is to put our time, talents, and treasure toward supporting their campaigns. They can’t do this alone.

Crampton goes on to quote the Idaho Democrat’s executive director, Jared DeLoof, who said, “I would always say to people, there is no cavalry coming to save us here in Idaho, and it’s getting worse and worse every year,” DeLoof said. “The place they want to take us is really scary and we can’t take it lying down.”

I encourage you to read the entire article called Combatting cannibalism and jailing librarians: Idaho Democrats see opportunity in extreme GOP agenda.

Earth Day Celebration

April 22 is Earth Day, but we will be celebrating it this Saturday, April 20 in Coeur d’Alene. So, gather your friends and family and join fellow Democrats for this annual spring celebration. It takes place from 10 am – 2 pm on the grounds behind the Coeur d’Alene Public Library facing McEuen Park. The Kootenai Democrats will be hosting a booth offering information on “Planet versus Plastics,” and giving folks the chance to register to vote. We hope to see you there.

Stand Against Hate

Following the Earth Day Celebration, a group calling itself North Idaho United will host a vigil and a walk to take a stand against hate. The group says: “We hope you’ll please spread the word of our vigil that will begin at 2 pm on Saturday April 20, in McEuen Park behind the Coeur d’Alene library. We will hear some words from Stu Cabe, renowned teacher of anti-bullying tactics and climate culture positivity. Then we’ll walk silently through the park before pausing to reflect on the egregious incident involving the University of Utah’s women’s basketball team.”

Thanks for being a Democrat.
