Support Maui’s Fire Victims
The wildfires that swept through Lahaina HI last week burned eighty percent of this beachside resort community to the ground. To make matters worse, at last count, more than 100 people were confirmed to have died from this disaster. Moreover, the fire displaced thousands of residents. Therefore, resources are desperately needed to aid the survivors while they rebuild their lives. During a recent interview on “Pod Save America” (Crooked Media), US Senator Brian Schatz said that donations should be directed to the Hawaii Community Foundation. I just sent $20. Will you join me?
Celebrate Labor
As mentioned last week, on Labor Day, September 4 the Central Labor Council of North Idaho and the Spokane Regional Labor Council are jointly sponsoring a free Labor Day Picnic at Q’emiln Park in Post Falls. I hope to see you there.
Let’s Walk About It
Sadly, I learned that a friend of a friend of mine took his own life recently. Hearing that someone died by suicide is such jarring news. I had met Larry. To me, he was exceedingly pleasant, fun loving, and skilled. Tonight, I am spending the evening with my friend in the hope of filling the hole. I hardly knew Larry, but it’s something I can do.
According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, “In 2021, an estimated 12.3 million American adults seriously thought about suicide, 3.5 million planned a suicide attempt, and 1.7 million attempted suicide.” It is time we face this serious public health problem and learn the facts about how to help those experiencing mental health-related distress. Join neighbors and friends from across North Idaho as we remember those who we have lost and strengthen our resolve to support people in crisis. For the sixth year in a row, Kootenai Democrats are proud to support the Suicide Prevention Action Network of North Idaho’s Annual 5k Walk. This visibility campaign takes place on Saturday, September 9th, at Riverstone Park in Coeur d’Alene. If you wish to participate in the walk, you will need to register.
You Scream, I Scream
And finally, I just want to echo the announcement by the Kootenai Dem Club. They are hosting the last of their summer in person gatherings on August 25th. It is an Ice Cream Social at the home of John and Paula Neils. I will see you at the social.
Have a peaceful week everyone and stay cool. And thanks for being a Democrat.
